When you think of cleaning your gutters, you likely only think of clearing out debris and clogs from the inside to prepare for rainy winters. Oftentimes, attention is not paid to the exterior of gutters. As much as cleaning gutters out on the inside is important, cleanliness of the outside is just as crucial.
Why Does the Outside of Gutters Get Dirty?
>Water overflow. If your gutters are clogged and overflowing, water can leak over the sides and leave ugly stains behind.
>Mold or mildew. When the exterior parts of gutters become excessively damp, mold and mildew can breed and begin to spread across your gutters, leaving them looking very dirty.
>Leaves and other debris. Gutters collect tree debris or debris that is blown in by the wind. When this debris gets trapped in there for long periods of time, it can begin to decompose and leave stains on the outside of your gutters.
>Dirt from roof cleaning. While cleaning your roof, the water used can only go one way–down. Gutters are at the bottom of your roof, meaning they will catch all of the runoff from your roof cleaning. While most of it will travel through the gutter system and be discharged appropriately, some spray may get caught on the outside of the gutter, leaving dirt and residue to discolor your gutters.
>Asphalt from roof shingles. Over time, asphalt shingles will begin to break down and small dirt-like particles will fall from your roof. Some of these pieces of asphalt will stick to the exterior surfaces of your gutters and leave unattractive black streaks.

How to Clean Gutters with a Pressure Washer
- Purchase a gutter-cleaning solvent. Cleaning gutters can be facilitated with the use of a high-quality cleaner. We sell a concentrated gutter cleaner that will rid your home of those nasty gutter stains.
- Apply the solution to gutters. After diluting the chemical (as needed), simply spray it onto the outside of your gutters.
- Lightly brush heavily-soiled areas. Use a gentle brush to help work the solution into areas that need a little extra help.
- Rinse with a pressure washer. Begin rinsing at the same spot you first applied the cleaning solution. Use a low-pressure setting to fully rinse off all chemicals and dirt. Your gutters should now be stain-free!
