How to Clean Roof Shingles

How to Clean Roof Shingles

Roof shingles are something that you probably don’t ever think about cleaning until you notice that they’re dirty. If you live in a humid climate, you probably have noticed dark streaks on your shingles, something that can be attributed to a type of airborne algae called gloeocapsa magma. This algae thrives in moist environments, meaning that if the spores land on the north side of your roof, where there is less sunshine and moisture is more constant, your shingles will likely begin to develop the trademark black streaks of this algae.

While this algae can be harmful to your roof over time and you should keep an eye out for it, there are other reasons to clean your roof. There is likely a lot of debris trapped on your shingles, especially if you live near mature trees or in a place that has a heavy, consistent storm season. Moss can also form on your roof, which can trap moisture and lead to erosion. Essentially, cleaning your roof shingles will extend their lifespan and save you repair costs.

How to Clean Roof Shingles

  1. Purchase a roof cleaning chemical. Roof Cleaner Conc is a high-quality, heavy-duty cleaner designed to clean asphalt and fiberglass roof shingles (it can also be used on wooden decks and fences).
  2. Dilute the chemical before use. Roof Cleaner Conc should be diluted at a minimum rate of 10 parts water to 1 part cleaner. As this is a highly concentrated chemical, be sure to wear gloves, and face, and eye protection during this part of the process.
  3. Apply the chemical to your roof. Spray your 10:1 diluted solution onto your roof. Since a wet roof can be slippery, be sure to start spraying at the bottom of the roof and work your way up to the top. This way, you will always be standing on a dry surface and can avoid possible injuries. Also, Roof Cleaner Conc should never be allowed to dry fully on your shingles, so avoid cleaning on hot, sunny days where it will dry faster.
  4. Rinse the roof thoroughly. After applying the solution, rinse with water to completely remove all of the chemicals from the shingles. If using a pressure washer, only use a very low setting, as too much pressure may dislodge the grit that is embedded in your shingles, causing damage to your roof. Caution should be taken to rinse softly to reduce the risk of abrasion.
