What are the Different Types of Roof Shingles

There are several different types of roof shingles, and all are essential to providing your home with the protection it needs. It is important to note that all roof shingles—regardless of material and claimed longevity—are prone to all kinds of damage, but some more so than others.

What Are Roof Shingles?

Roof shingles provide your house with a layer of protection from environmental damage. There are several types of shingles that vary in longevity, cost, protection, and overall environmental attributions. They can also come in a variety of sizes, brands, and designs. Here are some general roof shingle types:

  • Steel
  • Metal
  • Copper
  • Wood
  • Concrete
  • Rubber
  • Slate
  • Asphalt
  • Solar
  • PVC

Since this is only a general list of what materials shingles can be, let’s take a closer look at some of the more popular types, and examine the pros and cons of each.

  • Asphalt = These shingles are commonly used for residential buildings. They are economical, easy to install, and cost-effective. But while they are economical, they have a rather short life span.
  • Wood = Wood shingles provide a natural look and are long-lasting (20+ years). However, they are vulnerable to environmental interactions such as fires and other extreme weather situations.
  • Metal = This type includes aluminum, steel, copper, and more. Metal shingles provide a longer life span and are energy efficient. While they are resistant to certain weather elements, they can be costly and easily dented by hail, fallen branches, etc.
  • Slate = This particular type is less likely to leak, and has a natural aesthetic (similar to the others previously mentioned), but is on the expensive side.
  • Clay & Concrete = Clay shingles are noncombustible and retain their color for long periods of time despite harsh sun or other extreme weather conditions that generally fade other types of shingles. These kinds also have insulating prosperities.
  • Composite = This type is a bit more expensive, but can be found on roofs in various locations. They come in several colors and are made with different materials such as rubber or plastic.
